The Maryport Inshore Rescue team was alerted by Belfast Coastguard following reports from a concerned member of the public at about 4.15pm yesterday.
A small 17ft fibre glass boat, with no engine or identifying marks, was located off Crosscanonby Road Ends, where members of Maryport Coastguard were on scene to secure a visual of the vessel before the lifeboat team arrived.
It was towed back to Maryport after the team confirmed there was no one on board, and that the vessel had most likely slipped its moorings.
Back at the marina members of Maryport Coastguard carried out further investigations and to try and identify the vessel and its owner.
Senior helm, Gary Hampson said: “Thanks must be given to the first informant who raised the alarm in the first instant. Although the vessel was found to be unmanned, the report was the right thing to do and this should be encouraged.”
